Sweet William is a biennial. It flowers in the 2nd year after sowing. Sow outdoors from may till july in a well manured and loosened seedbed. Sow shallow and rake in the seeds gently. Cover very slightly because Sweet William is a light germinator. Keep moist and weedfree. Thin the seedlings, when they're large enough to handle, to 25 cm apart.
Transplant the seedlings to their permanent spot from october on. Give them a sunny plot with some shade and well drained soil. Protect the young plants in their first winter against frosts. Sweet William attracts bees and butterflies and it has a very sweet and nice scent.
