Onion Agostana is a white onion variety with nice mild-tasting flesh that still has some spice in it. The onions are round and have a diameter of between 6 - 8 cm. Each onion weighs 190 - 220 grams. The flesh is hard and juicy. Onion Agostana isn't a really good storage onion, use the onions as fresh as possible. After harvesting, this onion can be kept in the crisper section of the fridge for about a week. Agostana is a late-ripening onion, it needs at least 130 days to ripen. So sow early.

Sowing indoors can be done from January - February in trays with separate cells filled with moistened sowing soil. Sow the seeds sparingly and 1 - 1½ cm deep. Cover the seeds with a layer of sowing soil, as onions are dark germinators. Keep the temperature as even as possible. Especially don't let the temperature drop at night. Keep well moist. From mid-March, as soon as there is no chance of severe night frost, put the seedlings outside in a sunny place with good drainage. Cut the seedlings off at the top so that they are 8 cm long. Tuck them 6 cm deep under the soil. Keep well moist and weed-free.
Sowing outdoors can be done from March, as soon as the ground starts to warm up and no more severe night frosts are expected. Sow in rows 30 - 45 cm apart. Sow sparingly and 1 - 1½ cm deep. Cover the seeds with a layer of sowing soil as onions are dark germinators. Thin out the seedlings to 8 - 12 cm when they are about 15 cm tall. Keep well moist and weed-free.
Harvest the onions when the tops are brown and dry. Pull the bulbs up from the ground. Onions need nutrient-rich, moist soil enriched with compost. Don't sow or plant onions in an area that has had onions in the previous 4 years. Placement of strongly scented plants like chamomile, savory and carrots in close proximity to onions could have a disruptive effect on the onion fly.
