Indoor sowing: April - May
Germination: 7-10 days
Germinationtemp.: 22 - 25°C
Sowing depth: 1 cm
Plant distance: 50 - 60 cm
Transplanting: from the middle of May
Plant position: sunny/sheltered
Harvest period: July - October
From April onwards the seeds can be sown indoors in separate pots or in trays. Cover the seeds with a layer of sowing soil. Keep the temperature as even as possible and especially do not let it drop at night. Keep well moist and warm. After the seeds have germinated, transplant the seedlings to a cold container or greenhouse after the last frost. The soil temperature should be at least 12 °C, colder is not helpful.
Melons bear fruit on the side shoots. The main shoot is topped off after the 4th or 5th leaf. Side shoots then emerge from the main shoot and are budded after the 6th leaf. The side shoots that emerge from this are the fruit-bearing side shoots which should be headed 1 or 2 leaves above the fruit. Provide a very sunny and warm location. The best results are obtained in an (unheated) greenhouse. As soon as the fruits appear, give the plants a week of organic liquid tomato fertiliser. Make sure they are firmly supported. Melons can also be grown upright. To do this, tie the melons to a sturdy support (climbing frame) and put them in a special net or clean, dry tights. Melons can be harvested when there are cracks in the rind on top of the melon and when the melon starts to smell strongly. It is also possible to harvest the melon at half maturity, in which case it should be left to ripen at room temperature. Always cut a small piece of stem with the melon. Melon can be kept at room temperature for 5 - 7 days. It is also possible to freeze the melon, in this case it can be kept for 12 months.
