Barletta is a pickling onion variety also known as St. Jans. This early variety produces little rounded, white onions with a delicious flavour. Very well suited for use in salads, soups and of course for pickling with vinegar.

Sow outdoors from april on, as soon as the soil can be worked, on a sunny plot with partial shade in well drained soil. Sow in rows 15-20 cm apart. Sow the seeds tight together to prevent the onions from getting to big. Keep moist and weed free.
Harvest the pickling onions after about 60 days and let some of them mature for a later harvest. Don't sow onions on a plot where onions were sow in the preceding year. Onions need fertile, moist soil enriched with compost.
